How to Relocate a Mini-Split Yourself in Under 5 Minutes

Most HVAC companies say moving a mini-split will void your warranty. Airspool founder Dave shows why the Quick ’n’ EasyTM system disconnects in under five minutes, with zero leaks and zero specialty tools required.

In this video

  • The Quick ’n’ EasyTM system uses twist-to-connect refrigerant, condensate, and communication lines, so disconnecting the unit takes under 5 minutes
  • Traditional mini-split brands explicitly warn against relocating their systems and warn it can void the warranty; Airspool is built to be moved
  • Let the system settle for about 10 minutes before disconnecting anything, so you don't burn your hands in heating mode or fight frozen lines in cooling mode
  • Electrical connections are pre-wired at the factory, so relocation only involves unplugging a power cord and control wire, not rewiring a board
  • Airspool backs the pre-installed system with a full 5-year guarantee rather than a standard compressor warranty
  • After disconnecting, the indoor unit lifts straight off its wall bracket, and reinstalling elsewhere is just the same steps done in reverse

Questions this video answers

Can I move my mini-split to a different room or wall myself?

With Airspool's Quick ’n’ EasyTM system, yes. The refrigerant, condensate, and communication lines are all twist-to-connect, so a homeowner can disconnect the unit in under five minutes and reinstall it at a new location without an HVAC technician.

Will moving my mini-split void the warranty?

On many traditional mini-split brands, yes, the manufacturer's documentation explicitly warns against relocating the system. Airspool is designed for relocation and backs it with a full 5-year guarantee instead of penalizing you for moving it.

Do I need a vacuum pump or flaring kit to disconnect a mini-split?

No, not with Airspool's system. Because the lines use a twist-to-connect design instead of traditional brazed or flared refrigerant connections, you can disconnect everything with the included gloves and no specialty HVAC tools.

How long should I wait before disconnecting a running mini-split?

Give the unit about 10 minutes to settle down before you disconnect anything. In heating mode the refrigerant lines will be hot enough to burn your hands, and in cooling mode letting it settle keeps the lines from being uncomfortably cold.

Is the electrical wiring complicated when disconnecting a mini-split?

No. Airspool pre-wires the indoor and outdoor electrical connections at installation, so relocating the unit only means unplugging a power cord and a control wire rather than working with the internal board wiring.

What do I do with the wall bracket when I move the indoor unit?

The indoor unit lifts straight off its mounting bracket the same way it went on. You then move that bracket to the new wall location, drill a new mounting hole, and reinstall the unit by reversing the disconnection steps.

How do I protect the indoor unit while I'm relocating it?

Set the unit down on a soft surface like a rug or a piece of cardboard rather than directly on a hard floor, since setting it on bare ground can leave small scratches on the housing.

Hey guys, Dave with Airspool here, and we believe we have the only mini-split that's both quick and easy to relocate or reinstall. And what's it called, guys?

"Quick and Easy!"

It's called the Quick ’n’ EasyTM. The name came about because of the installation process. Once you get this on the wall and get your condensate line, your communication control line, and your refrigerant lines through the wall, everything is twist-to-connect. It takes less than five minutes to connect everything, and the same way, it takes less than five minutes to disconnect everything, and that's what allows you to move it.

Now, this is a bit of a novel concept, as we'll see here. This is another brand — we'll call this company Dr. Cold — and you can see they strongly advise against relocating your system. And if once wasn't enough, they tell you twice: don't relocate your unit.

So here you can see this unit is running. The display shows it's on. It's running in fan mode right now because we're making a video. If it were running in cooling mode or heating mode, you'd want to give the unit about 10 minutes to settle down first. In heating mode, if you skip that and do what I'm about to show you, you'll burn your hands on the hot refrigerant lines. In cooling mode, letting the system settle down keeps your hands from freezing on the cold lines. So give your unit 10 minutes to settle before you disconnect anything, and then you can go through what we're about to show you.

We provide you with these gloves. I don't have the manliest of hands, so I use these, and you'll be able to use them too. Of the whole deinstallation process, about four minutes and twenty seconds of your five minutes is spent doing what I'm about to do.

All right, with that done, probably the first logical thing to do would be to unplug the unit. We didn't do that first here; we wanted to see if it killed the unit for a second, but no, it didn't. So we have this dummy plug right here just so we could show you the unit was actually running, since we don't have it plugged into a real outlet for this demo. In an actual install, this connection is outside, and you'll have some type of outdoor receptacle there. We don't just provide this power cord for you, we install it for you too.

So you unplug this, and then these are your communication control wires. We pre-wire everything for you, both on the outdoor unit and the indoor unit. It's not really that fun of a job to wire yourself. Sure, it's electrical, you could do it if you wanted, but the order of those wires matters. If you mix them up, it can blow a board. We handle all of that for you in the pre-installation process, so you don't have to worry about it. And because we do that pre-installation process, we're able to give you a full 5-year guarantee, not a warranty where they hand you a part and make you deal with it yourself, but a full 5-year guarantee, because we know it's going to run.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand. Instead of doing all that wiring yourself, you just disconnect the communication control wires. All right, so now everything is disconnected here. We can't prevent the cords from getting a little tangled up, that'll be the case until everything is wireless, but we're going to pull this cord back through here and get it ready to go through the wall. Everything needs to be straightened out so it can be pushed through cleanly.

For the indoor unit, I'm not going to go too deep into this, but this is just the mounting bracket. You take the unit off, it pulls right off the bracket and off the wall, the same way it went on. You'll have this bracket that you'll need to move to your new location and drill another hole for.

So you're going to end up with this awkward indoor unit in your hands. Feel free to have a friend help you with all the cords as they come through the wall. Set it down on something soft, like a rug, not your kittens, something that won't scratch the surface, because if you just set it on the ground as is, small scratches can happen. Cardboard works fine too.

Once it's off, you mount your wall bracket at the new location, drill your hole, and you're off to the races. Just do everything in reverse of what we just showed you. Refer to airspool.com and the Airspool YouTube channel for all the install videos we've made, and you'll be able to find everything there.
