01The big idea

Solar air conditioning, without the science project.

Most “solar AC” setups need batteries, an inverter, and net metering — you end up spending as much on the system around the air conditioner as on the air conditioner itself.

The HS12 skips all of it. Its DC motors run on the same power solar panels make, so panels plug straight into the unit. Sun out? It runs on solar first. Sun fades? Grid power fills in automatically. You switch nothing, manage nothing — and it works on day one with zero panels.

What you don't need

Batteries
Inverter
Net metering
Vacuum pump & gauges
Panels plug straight in. That's the whole system.
−22°F still heating, no backup heat
12,000 BTU heating & cooling
500 sq ft coverage, one zone
21.5 SEER2 cooling efficiency

02How it works

Three ways to power it. Zero switches to flip.

01

Grid only Works on day one

To heat to such low temperatures, the HS12 uses a NEMA 5-20R plug (20 amp, 120V) — it looks like a standard three-prong plug except one prong is on its side. Many homes already have these outlets.

02

Solar only Fully off-grid

Going off grid? We recommend about 1,500 watts of panels (3–4 standard panels) for year-round comfort, wherever you live.

03

Hybrid Sunshine first, automatically

The HS12 seamlessly blends grid and solar power. Solar is prioritized; grid fills in as needed. You never touch a switch.

Too little solar? Grid fills in automatically. Too much? No harm done. You never touch a switch.

03Do it yourself (really)

One drill. One afternoon. Six steps.

Most first-timers finish in 2–4 hours. The refrigerant connection itself takes about 5 minutes — by hand.

  1. 01

    Place the outdoor unit

Set it on a stable surface with room for airflow.

  2. 02

    Drill one hole

The included hole saw makes the pass-through for the line set. Angle slightly downward for drainage.

  3. 03

    Mount the indoor unit

Secure the wall bracket, hang the unit, check it is level.

  4. 04

    Twist to connect

Route the pre-charged lines and connect them by hand. About 5 minutes — no vacuum pump, no gauges.

  5. 05

    Plug in solar (optional)

Mount the isolator and click the solar connectors together — or skip this and run on grid.

  6. 06

    Turn it on

Power up, set your comfort mode, done.

Can someone who has never touched HVAC connect a mini-split in under 5 minutes? Timed, on camera.

You won't be left alone with a manual. Although it is an industry-best manual — full-color photos, written in plain English — you also get dozens of install videos and unlimited phone support if you get stuck.

04The honest question

“Will the twist-connect actually seal?”

What goes wrong with normal DIY mini-splits

Refrigerant leaks from badly-made flare connections. Skipped vacuum steps. Moisture trapped in the lines. Installing a typical mini-split takes a vacuum pump, gauge set, specialized wrenches, adapters, wire cutters — plus the know-how, patience, and time to use them right. Get one step wrong and the system leaks.

Why the HS12 sidesteps all of it

We do that work at our US headquarters. The refrigerant lines arrive pre-charged and sealed with our patent-pending Quick ’n’ EasyTM self-sealing twist valves. No flaring, no vacuum, no moisture risk. You twist the connections by hand — the whole hook-up takes about 5 minutes. They even unscrew and reconnect later without losing refrigerant, if you ever move the unit.

Every single unit is tested on solar, grid, and hybrid power before it leaves our building. That's why we can back it for five years — DIY install included.

  1. Super easy to install and use (especially using the custom phone app).

Kent Libbey October 2025 Verified buyer

I did a lot of research on mini-split options/products ranging from standard sub "Pro-install" no-name $600 to $1,800+ "DIY" options (e.g., MrCool, EG4). Short of trying to install the former (a cheapo $600 system) myself--which would have required $100s in tools I'll never use again and countless hours of YouTube watching, trial and error--everything ended up more expensive than the M12 system I bought from Airspool. (I was quoted over $4,000 by a "Pro" HVAC company to install a system if I supplied it--with electrical I'd already run to the location.)

I don't (yet) have any solar, but I like having that option in the future--which essentially came "for free" with Airspool. Installing even the few (3-4) solar panels to run my Airspool is a project (and budget) itself--and it may not be easy to justify, given how very little my system seems to be pulling from the grid right now. But I definitely like having that feel-good option in the future.

Installation was a breeze--given all the extras supplied by Airspool, e.g., tape, drill bits, and concrete saw--which I needed to get through my stucco exterior. Dave (the owner and person in the videos) walked me through everything I needed to make the decision to buy and to get the installation done myself. All in, the installation process--moving the units, unpacking, installing the wall mount, sawing the wall hole, setting up the outdoor unit--took about 6 hours over the course of a weekend, with about 15 minutes of help from one other person.

I love the custom (iPhone) app, which enables me to control the system (including scheduling it's use) remotely from any anywhere--in or out of my house. It's also nice to know exactly how much energy I'm using...which for my home office in a very temperate climate is practically none, at least for now.

I happen to like DIY projects--including this one--and I hate throwing many thousands of dollars to 'professionals' who add no value other than saving time. If you're like me, I strongly recommend buying and installing an Airspool product.

  2. HS 12000 purchase and install

    K. Warren December 2025 Verified buyer

Purchase was a breeze, the unit came in 3 packages one of them was the solar disconnect.

All contents were accounted for, Airspool has an exhaustive list of packing contents and who was responsible for checking the list.

Install was straight forward no issues. I'm not considered a serious diyer, my skills are very basic. I installed the head in a basement for heating only, I keep it set at 65. Probably a little undersized as app stats it 62 in the basement. At 65 the most the unit pulls is 800 watts and as low as 300 watts continuous. Running on ac hope to solar connect soon. Head is very quiet.

Over all very pleased with this unit.

I'm so impressed and so glad I got it. I can't wait to get my solar pannels in to run it that way.

The install was super simple and quick.

  5. Beyond Awesome

Chris Hayden June 2026 Verified buyer

We have the HS12 temporarily installed with impressive results. Since every step has matched the ease of install seen in Airspool and YouTuber videos we're convinced the addiction of solar panels will knock the purchase out of the park as one of the very best decisions we've ever had the privilege to make. Let me state clearly for the overlooking crowd, AIRSPOOL (HS12 specifically) IS THE ONLY DIY NO-BRAINER solution.

Our install adds efficiency to an aging (2006) ducted Carrier 2-ton seer-13 heatpump system that needs aux-heat below 30-degrees. Although a 1-ton Airspool cannot replace a need for a whole house system, it does handle the kitchen/living open concept portion of our home. Although the rest of the house lags behind the temp in the living space, our Nest thermostat cycles the Carrier’s airhandler fan on for 30-minutes per hour moving some of the Airspool's conditioned air to the bedrooms and bathrooms. So far, we only need to top off the sleeping temp with the Carrier for ~30-minutes to condition the bedroom for perfect sleeping temps. Airspool's app reports 77kwh over the first 9-days of operation @ ~$0.11 per kwh that's about a $Dollar a Day fully running on the grid. 90% of that should be saved once we get some solar panels in place.

  6. The easiest install.

Derek Anthony Santiago April 2025 Verified buyer

Excellent and easy installation just like the last time but installed in my 1958 aluminum trailer. Standard RV Ac units will not be able to compete with the versatility of these solar mini splits. They heat, cool, and dehumidify the trailer more efficiently without the very loud decibles of traditional rooftop RV AC units. My Airspool keeps my trailer at such am amazingly consistent temperature, something that never really worked in this intense Las Vegas sun. My only gripe is the putty provided for the 2.5 hole fill is hard and unmalleable. I ended up using butyl tape as a substitute since it’s made for outdoor usage and is used on trailers the last for decades in the elements. Looking forward to your outdoor rooftop options.

I had direct contact with the sales and support team: consistently positive and amazing! They restored my faith in dealing with American companies. I spoke with a human every time, and I could understand our conversation: clear and concise. Airspool was so remarkably easy to deal with, I purchased a second unit to keep my fiancee's Northeast PA's home warmer. If the HS12 (12,000 BTU) Quick ’n’ EasyTM solar air conditioner/heater with Superheat works as advertised, I will install a third one in my mother's home: No more propane or wood stove fire hazard. Plus, the solar hybrid will keep her alive during a power outage this winter. Great product Airspool, and thanks a million Dave!!

I’m really impressed with how quick and easy the installation went. The included tools and supplies made it really simple with minimal tools needed. The outdoor unit was a little damaged in shipping, I emailed a couple of pictures and received a phone call within 30 minutes. I have referred multiple friends already and will continue to do so. The unit works really well in both cooling and heating modes. Well made mini split and excellent customer service.

  12. Best DIY heat pump out there!

    Matt January 2026 Verified buyer

I was this close to buying a Mr Cool heat pump to get it before the federal tax credit ran out. It certainly seemed easier to install than most heat pumps out there, but it still looked harder than what I wanted to handle. I wanted a heat pump that had a prewired 120V plug so I could just plug into a regular outlet, and that led me to find Airspool, I'm so happy I did. Not only do they pre-install a 120V plug, but they also revolutionized the ease of connecting the line set and communication cables. I probably could have handled these on the Mr. Cool but it would have been a hassle and there were all sorts of ways I could screw it up. With Airspool is was dead simple to just screw them in by hand. When they say quick and easy they really mean it!

For my order I asked if they could ship it with the flexible line set that they normally use for the bigger HS24 and they agreed. This made it even easier to install as threading the line set behind my gutter and around the corner of my house was a one man job that took seconds and didn't require careful bending of a hard copper line set always hoping not to crimp it. We'll see how durable this flexible line set is in the long run, but if it holds up it is clearly easier to handle than hard copper and should become the default. Heck, if they could make the connecter stub that you have to carefully bend out of the back of the indoor mini split out of this too it would be even easier, as bending that out was really the only hard part of the install.

The only other issue with the install was that after I had routed the line set from the outdoor unit to the indoor unit the two ends were not aligned. One was sticking about 8 inches further out than the other. I'm not sure if this was because the lines were cut after they had been coiled (and thus the only on the outside of the coil was a bit longer) or if it had been somehow pulled back as I maneuvered the line set around. Either way the fix was simple, just cut a few of the zip ties holding the lines together and allow the longer line to droop a bit to even them out.

The fact that you can unscrew the line set is also amazing. I avoided drilling through my wall entirely by simply opening a window 6 inches then cutting a piece of foamboard to fill that gap and cutting holes for the line set, wire and drain through that board. This made install even easier and if I ever move I can literally take the system with me without leaving a huge hole an exterior wall. It'd be amazing if Airspool someday made a window mount that held the indoor and outdoor units securely with a foam block that can be trimmed to size, but maybe that's a dream too far. All I can say is that I was also waiting for the Gradient and Midea window units for years and they just haven't hit the market widely and have so so reviews and high prices where they have. Okay that's probably way too much info for most people, and I didn't even talk about how the solar input lets this enable balcony solar in states where it isn't legal, but I digress. I hope you found it useful!

07The running cost

What it costs to run. Honestly.

50–80% lower cooling-related electricity costs during sunny months — what Airspool customers typically report

Air conditioning is 50–70% of most summer electricity bills. Solar targets that biggest expense directly.

Some customers report running costs under $50 a year — yours depends on sun, climate, and electricity rates.

The EVI compressor also heats more efficiently: 10.8 HSPF2 means more heat per watt all winter, even when it is not brutally cold.

Run your own numbers: is solar air conditioning worth it?

08Straight talk

Is the HS12 right for you?

We'd rather point you at the right unit than sell you the wrong one.

Right for you if…

  • One room or zone up to about 500 sq ft — a bedroom, garage, shop, ADU, or addition
  • Winters that drop below 5°F — the HS12 keeps heating down to −22°F with no backup heater
  • A 120V, 20-amp outlet (NEMA 5-20R) — or an electrician can swap one in quickly and inexpensively
  • You want solar now, later, or just the option
  • You can drill one hole in a wall

Not right for you if…

14Everything else

Questions, answered straight.

How loud is the HS12?

The indoor unit operates at library-level quiet and most people forget it is running. The outdoor unit is comparable to a normal conversation. The variable-speed compressor ramps smoothly and avoids jarring on/off cycling.

How much space does the HS12 cover?

About 500 sq ft, which is ideal for a large bedroom, living room, studio, garage, workshop, or ADU. Need to cover around 1,000 sq ft in a cold climate? Check out the HS24 SuperHeat.

What is EVI SuperHeat and can it really heat at -22°F?

Yes. EVI (Enhanced Vapor Injection) adds a secondary injection cycle to the compressor that supercharges its ability to extract warmth from extremely cold air. Standard heat pumps lose efficiency and eventually stop working below freezing, but the HS12 keeps heating all the way down to -22°F. No backup heater needed.

How is the HS12 different from the MS12?

Same unit with two key upgrades: EVI SuperHeat technology that heats down to -22°F instead of the MS12’s 5°F, and a 20-amp outlet requirement (NEMA 5-20R) instead of the MS12’s standard 15-amp outlet. Everything else, including Quick ’n’ EasyTM connection, solar capability, cooling performance, 12,000 BTU rating, and the guarantee, is effectively the same. If you live in a mild-to-moderate climate, the MS12 is a great value. If your winters are serious, the HS12 is the one.

What kind of electrical outlet does the HS12 need?

A 120V, 20-amp outlet (NEMA 5-20R). This looks almost identical to a standard outlet but has a T-shaped slot on one side. Many homes already have these in kitchens, bathrooms, and garages. If you are not sure, check the outlet or have an electrician swap one in quickly and inexpensively.

Do I need solar panels right now or can I get them later?

No. The HS12 works perfectly on grid power alone. Add solar panels whenever you are ready. Many customers start on grid and add solar later to reduce their electricity costs.

How many solar panels do I need for the HS12?

About 1,500 watts, which is usually 3-4 standard panels. Budget around $400-$600 for panels plus mounting hardware. A little under is fine because grid power fills in automatically.

How long does the HS12 take to install?

Most first-timers finish in 2-4 hours. The Quick ’n’ EasyTM twist connections take about 5 minutes. The rest is mounting the wall bracket, drilling the pass-through hole, and routing the line set.

What tools do I need?

Just a drill. We include a hole saw, drill bits, screwdriver bit, level, gloves, and all mounting hardware. No vacuum pump, no gauges, and no torque wrench.

What happens if I have too much or too little solar power?

No worries either way. Too little solar means grid power fills in automatically. Too much means the excess voltage simply goes unused without causing any problems. The system is designed to be flexible.

Can the HS12 cool in summer too?

Absolutely. The HS12 cools in temperatures up to 131°F, identical cooling performance to the MS12. It is a full heat pump: heating and cooling, year-round, in one unit. The SuperHeat upgrade only affects how cold it can heat.

Will the HS12 work during a power outage?

If the sun is shining, yes. Solar panels continue powering the unit. At night during an outage, you would need battery backup or a generator.

What maintenance does the HS12 need?

Clean the indoor air filter quarterly by rinsing it under water, shaking it dry, and replacing it. Vacuum the indoor coil and spray the outdoor coil annually. That is it.

Can I move the HS12 after installation?

Yes. The Quick ’n’ EasyTM self-sealing valves unscrew and reconnect without losing refrigerant. About 5 minutes each way. No HVAC tech needed.

What's included with my HS12?

Indoor and outdoor units, pre-charged 10-ft twist-to-connect copper line set, 120V 20-amp power cord, communication wire, wall bracket, remote control, condensate hose, and our free Quick ’n’ EasyTM Bonus Kit (solar whips, DC isolator, solar wire, hole saw, drill bits, level, gloves, and more). Everything except a drill and solar panels.

How much does shipping cost for the HS12?

Shipping is highly discounted worldwide and shown at checkout before you purchase. You will receive 3 boxes: outdoor unit (around 95 lbs), indoor unit (around 27 lbs), and solar isolator (around 2 lbs).
