Two Ways to Put a Window AC on Solar

The DIY-rig way: take any window unit, buy an inverter and enough battery to survive the compressor's startup surge, and wire it together. It genuinely works — plenty of off-gridders do it — but the battery and inverter usually cost more than the AC, and they're one more thing to size, mount, and maintain.

02 Install day

If You Can Fit a Normal Window AC, You Can Fit This

No wall hole, no line set, no bracket on the siding. The WS12 sits in a standard window like any window AC, the accordion panels seal the gap (including the new cover), and the solar panels connect with the included wiring. Then pair the app. The whole thing, panels included, is one short video.

Because it plugs into a standard outlet, there's no circuit work in the typical install — and if your outlet situation is unusual, that's a quick question for a licensed electrician.

03 Honest limits

What a Window Unit Won't Do

A window unit cools the room it's in — it won't carry a whole floor, and it occupies part of a window. If you're cooling a large open space or want invisible equipment, a DIY mini split is the better tool: one small wall hole, more capacity, quieter. Same solar hybrid idea, different format. Neither is "better" — they're answers to different rooms.

Is there really such a thing, or is it marketing?

It's real — the WS12 connects panels directly and meters down your daytime cooling cost. What's mostly marketing is anything implying a window unit can run around the clock on a small panel with no grid: physics says otherwise, and hybrid blending is the honest solution.

How many panels do I need?

Two ordinary residential panels make a real difference — we've run one on exactly that, on camera.

What about at night?

Grid power takes over seamlessly. Daytime is when the savings happen — which is also when cooling costs peak.

Window unit or mini split?

Renting, one room, zero tolerance for wall work: window unit. Bigger space, permanence, quietest possible result: mini split. Talk it through with us if you're torn.
